The number of patients referred to secondary care as urgent suspected cancer (USC) and subsequently confirmed to have mouth cancer is low at 5% resulting in a potential for delay in diagnosis. All dental healthcare workers need to have confidence in performing a mouth cancer check and if necessary using the USC referral pathway.
Aims
To provide a comprehensive guide to the use of the Easy Ten Step Mouth Cancer Check and its relationship to the Urgent Suspected Cancer referral pathway. To ensure that all dental healthcare workers have confidence in examining the head and neck of patients and being able to appropriately refer those suspected of having mouth cancer to secondary care.
