We are a world-leading academic centre for postgraduate dentistry and translational research based in London. Much of our research is focused upon preventing, diagnosing and treating common oral disorders such as childhood dental decay, gum disease in adults or oral cancer. Our students and staff are also engaged in research that is expected to have a wider impact on collective public health, such as antibiotic resistance and bone repair.

At UCL Eastman, we offer three types of research degree in dentistry: a professional doctorate (DDent) award, a three-year MPhil/PhD, and a four-year clinical experience PhD.

DDent Paediatric Dentistry: This course includes taught components and (where applicable) practical assignments, plus a research thesis. You also undertake a certain number of clinical sessions. You must have an approved dental qualification plus 2+ years of clinical experience post-qualification.

MPhil/PhD Eastman Dental Institute: A 3-year full time or 5-year part time programme to conduct a research project under the expert guidance of a primary supervisor from our research departments. Research may be laboratory or clinically relevant, depending on the needs of the research project.

MPhil/PhD Clinical Experience: A 4-year course which offers the opportunity to work on a science or clinically relevant project under expert supervision. You will be linked with a clinical unit depending on your trained specialisation. You may also sustain limited clinical activity depending on the demands of the hosting division.

There are a large number of funding schemes which support graduate students, including scholarships, studentships, awards, bursaries, grants and loans. Furthermore, some students are fortunate to be sponsored by their employer. For more details, see: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/eastman/study/research-mphilphd-degrees/funding-advice
