Cleft Lip and Palate Action (CLAPA) is the UK’s charity supporting people affected by cleft lip and palate. Around three babies are born with a cleft every day in the UK, and the need for informed, high-quality dental care can continue throughout their lives.
Our national campaign, End the Cleft Dental Care Crisis, is calling for everyone born with a cleft to have guaranteed lifelong access to NHS dental care. A CLAPA survey of 432 people affected by cleft found that 49% had experienced difficulties accessing local dental services, while 42% reported receiving inadequate care because of limited cleft awareness or training.
We are working with dental professionals, professional bodies and the cleft community to:
- Improve access to lifelong NHS dental care
- Strengthen cleft education and training for the dental workforce
- Support better integration between general dentistry, orthodontics and specialist cleft teams
- Improve the monitoring of dental access and outcomes
