Discover the science behind PRF with Emily Lu at Dentistry Show London

Discover the science behind PRF with Emily Lu at Dentistry Show London

Curious about how platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) can enhance healing and improve patient outcomes? Join Dr Emily Lu, Consultant in Periodontology and Senior Clinical Lecturer at King's College London, for ‘PRF Chairside: Translating Biology into Everyday Practice’ at Dentistry Show London, taking place on the 10th October at 11.15am at the Speciality Interest Theatre.

Ahead of her session, Emily shares why PRF is attracting so much attention and how clinicians can incorporate it into practice with confidence.

What is PRF, and why is it becoming such an important topic in dentistry?

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a biomaterial prepared from a patient's own blood using a simple chairside centrifuge. It contains platelets, white blood cells and naturally occurring growth factors that support the body's healing process.

It's gained popularity because it's straightforward to prepare, cost-effective and uses the patient's own biology. While it's not a replacement for good surgical technique, it can be a valuable adjunct in selected periodontal, implant and oral surgery procedures.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about PRF?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that PRF can compensate for poor case selection or surgical technique. In reality, it works best when the fundamentals are already in place.

It's also important to remember that PRF isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Different regenerative therapies have different indications, so clinicians should always be guided by the evidence and use PRF where it offers genuine clinical benefit.

How can clinicians use PRF safely and predictably?

PRF should be viewed as an adjunct to good clinical practice rather than a substitute for it. Success depends on choosing the right patients, following validated preparation protocols and integrating PRF into evidence-based treatment planning. With appropriate training and careful case selection, it can become a valuable addition to everyday practice.

What can delegates expect from your session?

This will be a practical session designed for clinicians to take ideas straight back to practice. We'll explore the biology behind PRF, review the latest evidence and work through clinical cases showing where PRF can support soft tissue healing and where its benefits may be more limited.

Delegates will leave with practical guidance on patient selection, PRF preparation and how to incorporate it safely and predictably into everyday clinical practice.
